Throwback Thursday to earlier in the week when FacePlant Sunglasses went live on Kickstarter.com to introduce the world to their new sustainable eyewear. We’ve spent the last two years developing the most sustainable and AWESOME sunglasses on the planet and they don’t cost the earth (sorry we couldn’t help ourselves…) Find out how we did it below…
Each pair of FacePlant™ sunglasses are made from five recycled plastic bottles, keeping them out of landfill and the ocean. This plastic is extremely tough and resilient, and when you have finished with the frames, they are fully recyclable. If you send them back to us, we’ll recycle them back into our production!
Our lenses are biodegradable and made from plant-based materials. They have unreal optical clarity, alongside incredible impact and scratch resistance. The lenses will start to biodegrade after 10 days in the ground; they will disintegrate into carbon, H2O and organic matter in 60 months leaving no trace.
We all scratch our sunglasses no matter how careful we are! With FacePlant™ lenses, you can pop them out, plant them in the ground and put new lenses back in your frames! The lenses will biodegrade, and you’ll have given your sunglasses a new lease of life! This expands the lifetime of your sunglasses indefinitely; we are not into fast fashion.
Here at FacePant™, we use a unique flexible hinge. It’s completely different to a standard hinge used for eyewear and integrated into the design of the frames. The FLX Hinge 2.0 not only helps with the fit of the glasses on your head and keeps them in place during sports, but it is also an integral part of their strength and durability.
FacePlant™ sunglasses are freakishly indestructible. We wanted them that way from day one, and we have created a product that will last you a lifetime. #Nofastfashion. We’ve pulled them, squeezed them, sat on them, stamped on them, smashed them with hammers. We even had Bigfoot run them over in his 2-ton Land Rover Defender at 30 mph; they survived and are still wearable!
Our FacePlant™ sunglasses are exceptionally light, weighing in at a mere 31g, which is lighter than our CFO’s wallet after a night on the gin. All three founders are keen sports enthusiasts, and we wanted to make sure we could wear them mountain biking, running hard in 100 degrees or dancing on a beach!
All our FacePlant™ lenses are UV400 and Cat 3 rated, classed as the best protection for your eyes from UV and visible light. They are CE and UKCA certified, and we also have a polarised option for those looking for unrivalled optical clarity.
We believe in our products so much that we offer a no-quibble lifetime guarantee on all our sunglasses. If you manage to break them, we will fix them for you. If we can’t fix them, we’ll recycle them into our 360 closed-loop production process and send you a new pair.
The goal was to create two styles that fit a wide range of face shapes and head sizes. These are not off-the-shelf moulds, but our own custom, in-house designs! We spent years measuring heads, faces, and sunglasses.
We started with basic illustrations in Illustrator, then stepped up to CAD, 3D printing and even hand-shaped sampling to develop our two models for launch. We decided to name them after influential movies from our youth (can you guess the titles?) Meet the Crash Overrides and the Wasted Weekends!
Inspired by classic Italian styling with a modern twist, the Crash Overrides are a little smaller on the face. Thanks to the flexible materials and FLX Hinge 2.0, they will fit a wide range of head sizes. Available in three colours: Graphene Black, Ghost White and Ice Teal, with our cocktail-inspired lens colours: Black Velvet and Blue Lagoon.
A weekend wasted is never a wasted weekend. The Wasted Weekends are a statement pair of bold sunglasses. Thanks to the flexible materials and FLX Hinge 2.0, they will fit a wide range of head sizes. Available in three colours: Graphene Black, Ghost White and Neon Orange, with our cocktail-inspired lens colours: Dragon Fire and Blue Lagoon.
We have thought carefully about all our packaging and will not be using any virgin plastics at all. Our premium box, which ships with every pair of sunglasses, is made from FSC Certified Sustainable materials and can be recycled, although it’s great for keeping your sunglasses safe. We also include a really soft microfibre bag which is made from recycled plastic bottles. It’s perfect for keeping your sunglasses scratch-free and clean when you are on the go!
