Foiling terms: Angle of Incidence vs Angle of Attack

The term angle of attack (AOA) is often used in foiling but technically the static angle built into the foil is called the angle of incidence (AOI) while angle of attack is the variable angle between foil and the water flowing over the foil while foiling. My friend Lane Mead from Ke Nalu pointed this out to me and I find the concept helpful in understanding how the foil works, the interplay between the foil and the angle relative to the board, and how to control flight by adjusting the dynamic angle of attack by shifting body weight.
As Sam Pa’e says: “fly low and in control”, this is a helpful tip to remember when learning how to foil. Controlling the angle of attack and keeping it small relative to the surface of the wave and the water flow is one of the most challenging aspects to learn when you are starting out.
